Moving to Florida?
Welcome to Florida! Every state has different requirements for licenses. Florida requires the following professionals to complete a 4-Hour HIV/AIDS course to obtain a license or registration:
- Cosmetologists (stylists, hairstylists, or hairdressers)
- Facial Specialists (estheticians, skincare specialists)
- Nail Specialists (manicurists, pedicurists, or nail technicians)
- Full Specialists (Facial Specialist + Nail Specialist)
If you have questions about getting your Cosmetology license, Facial Specialist, Nail Specialist, or Full Specialist registration in Florida – you are in the right spot. Not only do we offer the course you need in a quick and simple format, but we also want to help guide you through the Florida licensing process, so you can get to work (or back to work) in the Sunshine state.
Expired or Null and Void Licenses
We all need a break sometimes. Sometimes we have to take a break. If you have missed at least two Florida license renewals, your license is no longer just delinquent, it is null and void. A null and void application allows you to get your license back in good standing if you demonstrate the reason you did not renew was due to health or economic reasons. If you are ready to return to work in the cosmetology field after a few years off, you will need to retake a 4-hour HIV/AIDS course to get a new cosmetology, nail, facial or full specialist license.
This course satisfies the 4-hour HIV requirement if you are trying to reactivate a null and void Florida cosmetology board license or apply for a new license or registration.
However, if you have only missed one renewal (either 2022 or 2023) and your license is only delinquent, you need to complete 10 hours of Board-approved education to get your license back in good standing.
You can find the 10-hour renewal course right here.
4 Hour HIV Course Questions
Can this course be completed online?
Yes! Complete this course online at your own pace. No need to sit in class or go to Florida before you get licensed. The initial 4-hour HIV/AIDS course must be from a Florida Cosmetology board-approved provider (which we are).
How do I complete this course?
To complete this course, read the course materials, complete a 20 question open-book exam (multiple attempts are allowed). Your certificate is available immediately after the completion of the exam.
Is this course only available in English?
All of our courses and exams are web-based. The course is in English, but you can translate any page into any language, including Spanish, Mandarin (Chinese), Korean, or Vietnamese if needed.
How is the Florida Cosmetology Board notified that I took the 4-hour HIV course?
After you pass the exam, download and print your certificate, and include it with your Florida application.
Please mail your completed application, documentation and required fee(s) to:
Division of Professions
Board of Cosmetology
2601 Blair Stone Road
Tallahassee, FL 32399-0791
Get Your License Faster
The board has now moved to paperless licensing, meaning they no longer mail you a license. Once your license is issued, you will get an email from the DBPR. Next, print off your license on the Cosmetology Board website. We made a short video of how to do that right here: How To Print Your Cosmetology Board License.
Again, starting the licensing process begins with this first step, a board-approved 4 hour HIV/course.
What is covered in this course?
Initial 4-Hour HIV/AIDS Course Objectives
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- List stages of the HIV/AIDS virus
- Define different treatments for HIV/AIDS, including PrEP, PEP, ART, and HAART
- List 3 High-Risk Populations for HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis
- Differentiate between Hepatitis A, B, and C
Ready to Get Started on Your 4 Hour HIV Course?
To review, the required HIV/AIDS course must be from a Florida Cosmetology board-approved provider. It can be completed online. Additionally, it should be completed within two years prior to submitting an application. That means if you previously took the course to get your license years ago, you need to complete it again.
The process of getting your Florida license, or getting your license back in good standing, starts with this completing this course. So, if you are wondering what your first step should be, or some sign of what you should do next, completing this course is it.
